October Notes From Social Action CommitteeNight Without A Home" Sleep Out The Social Action Committee and DuSTY are planning to host a site at Temple as part of the community-wide "Night Without a Home" on September 30. This event is sponsored by CHUM and is intended to raise awareness of homelessness in our community by sleeping outside for a night. The event is also intended to raise donations that will help people who are without a home. Please join us! We will gather at 7:30 pm on Saturday, September 30, in the playground area beside Temple. We'll start the evening with Havadalah, followed by conversation and hot cocoa around a campfire in a fire bowl. Later in the evening, we will be visited by speakers who are stopping at all the Sleep Out sites around town, who will include Mayor Herb Bergson, County Commissioner Steve O'Neill, and a formerly homeless person. Then we'll spend the night outdoors in sleeping bags. We encourage everyone to participate in whatever way they can. If you can sleep out with us, great! If you can come for the early part of the evening even if you cannot commit to sleeping out, please do! If you are unable to join the event that evening, please make a donation! We will be collecting donations of money and of items needed by homeless people. Suggested items include: toiletries, socks, underwear, and blankets - all new and unused. To register to participate, to make a donation, and/or if further questions, please contact Holly Church at 525-6243 or Sue Ginsburg at 728-6243. Beach Sweep Success The Social Action Committee is delighted to report that on Sunday, September 10, thirty-six people participated in the Beach Sweep. It was a gorgeous day for cleaning up our community. The group collected a grand total of 93.5 pounds of garbage. (Last year's total was 50 pounds). This doesn't include the abandoned shopping cart that the Chai class found and returned. Our participants were Sunday School families and teachers, SAC members, and lots of Dusty and Chai teens and friends. Our tally this year was so much higher thanks to the impressive participation of Dusty and Chai. Our teens did a fabulous job. A note from Erin Zoellick, the Coordinator of the Beach Sweep at Great Lakes Aquarium: I am greatly impressed by the diligence and enthusiasm of this year's group. Perhaps it is simply because I was available this year to meet the members of your group, but it is also because they just plain worked hard. Please extend my very sincere thanks to all who participated in Beach Sweep 2006. They should be extremely proud of themselves.
