Congregational Choir |
||||||
|
Among the many great adult activities going on at Temple Israel is the Congregational Choir. This group of 12-18 sings both acapella and with piano or guitar accompaniment, in both English and Hebrew. There is no experience or knowledge of Hebrew required to join the choir, just a love of singing. The Congregational Choir rehearses once a week and acts as representative of the Temple at community events throughout the year. The choir also provides music for the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah and several Friday evening services throughout the year. The Temple Israel Choir continues to meet at 7:00 pm on Wednesday's throughout the summer at the temple. For more information, contact Casey G.

Thank you to everyone who donated food to the food drive over the High Holidays! We collected 1,421 pounds of food to donate to the CHUM Emergency Food Shelf. A special thanks goes to Neil Glazman for bringing his van and giving his time to help bring the bags of food to CHUM. DuSTY members will be leading the family service on November 5th. The service will be followed by a dairy potluck supper. All are welcome to attend. Feel free to bring food to share for the dinner, or just come for great food! If you have high school-age children please encourage them to attend Fall Conclave. It is being held in the Twin Cities November 19-21. DuSTY advisors, Jill Cornwell and Teddy Goldfine, as well as Rabbi Amy will be attending. We would really like to have a huge DuSTY turnout for this event, so please try your best to attend. For more information contact Jill Cornwell at home. Ana G., DuSTY President Old NewsDuSTY is putting on a really amazing event in May. We are hosting a mini-conclave called "Cruise With Jews". This will be held on May 21-23. We have invited Jewish teens from the Twin Cities to Duluth for the weekend. During the weekend we will have programs relating to Judiasm and being a teen in today's world. The main event of the weekend will be Saturday night when we take all the teens and chaperones out on a "cruise" on Lake Superior in the Vista Fleet. If you have a child involved in DuSTY, please encourage them to participate in this exciting event. We also may need other members of the community to host teens from the Twin Cities. If you are willing to do this, please contact Ana G. Thank you! |

Email Addresses |
||||||
|
For the past several months, we have been sending weekly notices out by email to remind people about activities at Temple. We have also used this network to inform people about deaths and funerals, shiva services, and other items of interest that were not previously published. If you have not received these notices, it is because you are not on our email list! All of our informational emails are sent out as a blind copy. That means that no one else gets your email address. Many people have expressed concern about giving their email address to everyone, and we are very careful not to do that. We will not publish your email address, online or in the Temple Directory, without your permission. If you would like to take advantage of the easy communication offered by email. Just send your address to tisrael@templeisraelduluth.org If your identity is not clear from your address, please be sure to include your name!

Friday Evening Shabbat Services |
||||||
|
The Friday Evening Services committee has a very diverse make up. We are women and men, native Duluthians as well as people who have lived here many years and people who have lived here a shorter time. We include Jews by birth and Jews by choice, strong classical Reform Jews and more traditionally observant Jews; parents of pre-bar/bat mitzvah children and people with adult children and grandchildren. We are looking to Temple Israel for spirituality, intellectual stimulation and/or community. In other words, we pretty much mirror the Temple Israel family. The charge of this committee
has been to examine Friday evening services in order to determine what
will bring people to services, and to develop a "Service Plan"
for six months at a time. Our last plan, as noted by the Rabbi's message
in last month's bulletin, was only partially successful, and so we recently
met to try again. After a great deal of discussion, we came up with
a simple plan for Friday night services. 6. We will try to expand the use of email to keep everyone up to date on sermon topics, special
events and other items of importance. (See the Temple
Email List article) We adopted several small suggestions that we hope will make the services feel "comfortable" to those who attend. Among them: A Board member will continue to act as host each week, welcoming people and distributing prayer books. The Board member will also sit on the Bima through the entire Service, providing assistance to the Rabbi as needed. The bulletin announcements will be abbreviated. Regular and ongoing activities will be printed and distributed. Birthdays and anniversaries will be announced as always, and special events will be announced for two weeks only. We will do a "mishaberach" each Friday. We may be a diverse committee, but we are still not as diverse as the congregation. We know we cannot please all of the people all of the time, but we hope to please many of the people some of time. If we are not pleasing you any of the time, please let us know! Your absence may speak volumes, but they are empty volumes if you don't tell us how to fill them. |
